Bits of Freedom is the Dutch digital rights organization, focusing on privacy and communications freedom in the digital age. The NGO was established in 2000 and it stands up for consumer freedom and privacy on the internet. Bits of Freedom strives to influence legislation and self-regulation, on a national and a European level and is one of the founders and a member of European Digital Rights (EDRi).
Other finalists included NoXqs and Internet Protection Lab. According to the jury both organizations fulfill also a major role in the Dutch (open) society.
The jury motivated its selection of the winner by stating: "The focus that Bits of Freedom puts on protecting civil rights on the internet will continue to increase, and remain important, in the coming years.”
Bernard Dijkhuizen, CEO of Ziggo, presented the award, a trophy and €15,000 at the Annual Ziggo Congres to Tim Toornvliet of Bits of Freedom. Mr. Dijkhuizen: “The Dutch society is well on its way to realize the ideal of an open society and that the quality, availability and accessibility of information and the digitisation required to facilitate, will play a huge role in preserving and fostering such an open society.”
