DJSI 2013: Telenet Reconfirms Position as Sustainability Frontrunner
Publ. date 21 Oct 2013
On September 12th, RobecoSAM announced the results of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2013, the most credible benchmark for the sustainable investment community. Our customer Telenet maintains its sustainability frontrunner position as industry group leader within the media sector and continues its membership of both the DJSI World and Europe Index.

Telenet celebrated for sustainability performance

Telenet entered the DJSI World Index in 2011 and became supersector leader for the first time in 2012. This year, the company received best in class scores for brand management, codes of conduct/compliance/corruption & bribery, independence of content, human capital development and talent attraction & retention.

As RobecoSAM writes in Telenet’s Industry Group Leader Report: “Innovation, creativity, digital progress, and customer satisfaction are key distinguishing factors for companies in this sector. Telenet implements its sustainability strategy through the “Linking Environment and Profit” (LEAP) program. Launched in 2010, this program is an integral part of Telenet’s long-term strategy and overarching business vision. By 2015, Telenet aims to be climate-neutral relative to its emission levels in 2007. Through these measures the group plans to address and mitigate future sustainability risks. In 2012 the group shifted all of its electricity consumption to green electricity sources, reducing its CO2 emissions by 25%”. Royal Ahold maintains its position within the DJSI World Index, among other Dutch frontrunners in the World Index, including DSM, Philips, PostNL, TNT Express, KPN, Akzo Nobel, Air France-KLM and Unilever.

About the Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Each year, over 2,500 of the largest companies in terms of float-adjusted market capitalization from all industries within the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index are invited to participate in RobecoSAM’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment. This assessment is based on the annual RobecoSAM questionnaire, combined with an external media and stakeholder analysis, the ongoing monitoring of media and stakeholder commentaries and other publicly available information from consumer organizations, NGOs, governments or international organizations. The assessment covers sustainability performance in the economic, environmental and social dimension.

The top-ranked companies within each industry are selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, divided into a global World Index, which consists of the top 10% in terms of sustainability in each sector, and separate indices for the regions North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Korea and, as of 2013, Emerging Markets. The indices serve as benchmarks for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios, and provide an effective engagement platform for companies who want to adopt sustainable best practices.
