ESG Acceleration Webinar: Forward-Looking Materiality

Using materiality to navigate to a sustainable future
During this webinar, we explored how to apply the materiality assessment as a tool to capture (emerging) ESG risks and opportunities, as a driver for future strategy and risk mitigation, and how to align materiality with enterprise risk management. Special guest speaker was Suzanne Westlake, Head of Corporate Responsibility & Corporate Affairs at Ocado Group.

Guest speaker Suzanne Westlake will share her experiences of developing a new materiality matrix and sustainability strategy that reflected Ocado Group's transition from an online grocery retailer into an online retail service platform provider.

From Finch & Beak's end, materiality expert Bas Nuijten will talk about how to make sure that your materiality matrix is sufficiently forward-looking, applying the concept of double materiality, and aligning materiality with business strategy and enterprise risk management.

Avoiding the reporting trap with an actionable materiality matrix

Key lessons to be learned during the session include how to:

  • Identify emerging risks and opportunities in the materiality assessment
  • Classify material issues to apply strategic focus and categorize risk to be monitored
  • Collaborate with the internal risk function and challenging stakeholders to take a long-term perspective
