The 2019 Global Dow Jones Sustainability Index Results

DJSI 2019: Peugeot, Unilever, Telenet and UPM among the industry leaders
The 2019 Global Dow Jones Sustainability Index Results
Publ. date 13 Sep 2019
Last Friday, SAM and S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the results of the annual Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) review. Newcomers in this year’s DJSI Indices include Alphabet Inc, Bureau Veritas, and Hilton Worldwide Holdings, while Royal Dutch Shell, 3M and DuPont are amongst those who dropped out. As our summarizing infographic illustrates, this year the overall participation grew with an astonishing 18%. This is in large part due to the soaring use of ESG data by investors and the increasing evidence of the prime position that the DJSI holds within the ESG arena.

In the 2019 assessment, the questions around several criteria were further sharpened to address investors' needs for greater management controls and disclosures. The criteria that were improved include Information Security, Cybersecurity & System Availability and Privacy Protection.

Media: Telenet prolongs industry leader position

Telenet can call itself the industry leader for the media industry for the 7th year. In an industry that has experienced a major shift towards digitalization, the company leads its sector on Privacy Protection. Telenet achieves its highest ratings in the social dimension, where it holds maximum scores for Responsibility of Content, a significant issue in the sector, and Talent Attraction and Retention.

Chemicals: PTT Global Chemical takes over industry leadership

PTT Global Chemical is the number 1 in the chemicals sector for the 2019 assessment, taking over the leadership position from DSM. PTT Global Chemical is especially rewarded for its environmental performance, taking leading scores in Product Stewardship, Climate Strategy and Water Related Risks.

Insurance: Allianz retains the lead in the insurance industry group

Allianz was also able to retain its number 1 position in the index this year. Leading insurers are increasingly considering long-term sustainability trends and factors in their risk assessments and claims management processes, with Allianz being praised for its performance in financial inclusion and climate strategy.

Professional Services: SGS maintains position as the industry leader

Quality of the workforce and a reputation for integrity are key drivers for the knowledge-intensive companies that are grouped in the professional services industry. SGS is acknowledged for an outstanding performance across the economic, environmental and social dimensions, leading the sector in critical issues such as corporate governance and human capital development. In this industry, newcomer Bureau Veritas takes up second place.

Energy Equipment & Services: Saipem remains at the top spot

For the third consecutive year, Saipem is recognized by RobecoSAM as industry leader for this sector, driven by adherence to environmental, health and safety, and business conduct standards. The Italian-based company is most specifically rewarded for its performance on codes of business conduct, innovation management and corporate governance.

About the Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Launched in 1999, the DJSI is the major standard for corporate sustainability. This year, over 3,500 of the world’s largest companies in both developed and emerging markets were invited to take part in SAM’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, in which the most financially material environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors are assessed. Only leading companies that are best equipped to recognize and respond to emerging opportunities and risks, resulting from global sustainability trends, are selected for inclusion in the DJSI.
